The Mountain Bluebird is still present at The Fairfax Recreation Area ( southern end of Lake Monroe).
The bird is usually seen in or near the beach parking lot. When we arrived the bird was sitting on a parking curb no more than 50ft away. The bird does not seem to be bothered by people, and will at times land close to you and forage.
To get to this area you can take 46 west and then 37 south a few miles outside of Bloomington, Indiana. Turn east (left) on Smithville Rd. which is well marked with signs for both Fairfax SRA and the Four Winds Resort. Follow Smithville to Fairfax Rd. which is the second stop sign. Again , look for the signs which indicate the way both to Fairfax SRA and the Four Winds Resort. Follow Fairfax Rd. until you pass the small gate house and you will see the lake on your left. Turn left into the parking lot. You can also take 50 west ( towards Muskatatuck) and the pick up 37 north. Good Luck.

Red-headed Woodpeckers (8 - 10) in the dead trees in the small "lake" along the main east-west road and in the woods next to it.

Numerous Northern Harriers and Red-tailed Hawks over open fields. 1 Rough-legged Hawk. 2 Bald Eagles in the protected area near the headquarters building.

2 Long-eared Owls and 2 Saw-whet Owls in the pine grove along CH-71 near the intersection with TH-103. (A local birder said many of the the Saw-whets are leaving the pine grove or are perching much higher up because people have been disturbing them as they sit down low, actually trying to touch them.)

17 Short-eared owls in trees around the Sportsmen's Service Center on CH-75. (There were men on horseback training dogs in a lot of the open fields and they may have flushed the Short-eared Owls and caused them to perch in the trees. Northern Harriers were harassing some of the owls.)

Great Blue Heron 2,Canada Goose 200+, Green-winged Teal 5, Black Duck 11, Mallard 400+, N. Pintail 4, N. Shoveler 1, Gadwall 4, Am. Wigeon 1, Ring-necked Duck 4, Lesser Scaup 3,Hooded Merganser 2,Ring-billed Gull 85, Red-winged Blackbird 3. Also found, earlier in the day, a Red-tailed Hawk sitting on a nest in the Gilmore Ponds area. This would be a very early nesting date. While I cannot be sure it was sitting on eggs, it certainly was committed to the nest. Note! A visit to the settling pond earlier in the day turned up very little. On our return in late afternoon many more waterfowl were present and continued to come in right up to and after dark.

Location: Killdeer Plains
Reporter: Don Kinsman
Other Birders: Anne Kinsman, Chuck Tirone, Rosemarie Tirone; joined at points by 7 other unidentified birders

From about 11 AM to about 5 PM

Best sightings were 2 Rough-legged Hawks and 5 Saw-whet Owls. One hawk was seen both in flight and perched, while the other was only seen in flight. The Saw-whet Owls were all sitting close together in a pine grove. Although there were 11 birders looking for Long-eared Owls in the pines we could not find any. An owl which we thought was a Long-eared flew through the pines, but all 11 of us got only a brief glimpse and we could not be 100% certain.

Many people were looking for Short-eared Owls from 4 PM on, but none were found. The owls may have been distured from their usual areas and patterns because many, many hunters were prowling the fields all day. It turned out this was the lottery weekend and the winners were allowed to hunt in the park itself.

There were also a couple of Chukars by the dog kennels. Presumably they have been introduced for hunting purposes.
