Upon reviewing some owl calls that I have on tape, the owls I heard calling near Lakota High School could have been immature Great-horned Owl begging calls ( as noted by Mike Busman on 9/6/98) The bird that was on the fence was also giving the same call before flying off. This owl appeared smaller than a Great horned Owl and had more slender wings, but I did not get a good look. I apologize for confusing these calls.

Middle Creek Rd. Red-tailed Hawk; Am. Kestrel; Red-Bel. Woodpecker; Gr Crested Flycatchers; White-br. Nuthatch; N. Mockingbird; Y.-rumped Warbler; Black-thr. Green W; Bay-br. W; Blackpoll W (?); Com. Yellowthroat; Balt. Oriole. The number of Warbler species would have been higher had it not been for the very large numbers seen in a given period. At the major power lines, between 9:15-9:30+, I stopped trying to indentify the W's, but started to count them. In that period of time over 150 W's (in waves of 10-15) passed across the road!

Stopped at Aurora Ferry Road. Saw Red-tailed Hawks; Killdeer; E.Bluebirds; Mockingbirds; E. Meadowlarks, Wood Ducks, G.B. Heron; 100's of R W Blackbirds and best of all, a Blue Grosbeak sitting on a electric line between Aurora Ferry Rd. & Horsley Ferry Rd.

No sign of the Barn Owls. One Great Horned was seen on the ballfields, though, which might not be good news for the Barn Owls. This was a likely immature bird, as it was giving the "eeaak!" call--for want of a better term. On the 5th, Andy Fix was at Lakota West from 11:30 until 1:00 am and didn't hear or see anything. Hopefully, we just overlooked the birds.

Most vocalizations came from the trees and fields lining the north side of Lakota Drive West.

There are some mudflats developing just off the Gilmore road parking lot. There were a few shorebirds present last night, besides 15 or so Killdeer: 3-5 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 1 Semipalmated Plover, 5 Solitary Sandpipers, 1 Yellowlegs (probably lesser), 3-5 Pectoral Sandpipers. Viewing the mudflats is tough and getting good views of all the birds even trickier. The vegetation around the area is high, and to get around the edge of the vegetation, you risk scaring the birds away. But it's a mudflat, at least. 4 Great Egrets, 3 Great Blue Herons, 1 Black-crowned Night Heron, 1 Green Heron.

Along Dry Fork Rd. there is a small mud flat on the edge of the road in a soy bean field. This small area held water through spring and continues to hold some water though the summer months. The water is slowly drying up and will probably last another week or so. This small mud flat is a magnet for migrating shorebirds. Birds observed Friday evening included 10 Solitary, 7 Pectoral, 8 Least, and 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, and 4 Killdeer.
You can find this small mud flat between Short Rd and Mt. Hope Rd. following Dry Fork Rd. If heading North on Dry Fork It will be on your right, if heading south it will be on your left.

While banding this morning at my MAPS station near Bowles Woods, I came across a Black and White Warbler. This bird was singing frequently. Early fall migrant? First year non-breeding male? There was also an American Redstart singing in the same area until the end of June. I could not locate this bird today. This bird was looked at closely with binoculars, this bird was a first year male.
