SUMMARY:November Program- Wetlands and the Mill Creek Alliance with Dave Schmitt
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nPresented by Dave Schmitt \nSharon Woods Visitor Center \nIn 1997\, Mill Creek was named “the most endangered urban river in North America” by American Rivers and considered irremediable by many. \nThey were wrong! \nAs a result of 30 years of dedicated work by the non-profit Mill Creek Alliance and many partners and volunteers\, Mill Creek has made a stunning recovery. Dozens of stream restoration projects\, hundreds of cleanups\, tens of thousands of trees planted\, aggressive independent water quality monitoring\, watershed-wide environmental education\, and multiple recreational opportunities have resulted in a stream and watershed that has once again become an amenity for the entire region\, and which can serve as as catalyst for multiple future benefits for some of our most under served communities. \n  \nMill Creek Alliance has completed one large wetlands restoration project in West Chester Township which is already attracting a lot of birds. An even larger wetlands restoration project on property immediately upstream from the first is currently out to bid\, and will be constructed in 2025. \n  \nFind out more! Audubon Society of Ohio welcomes Dave Schmitt\, Executive Director of Mill Creek Alliance\, this Wednesday evening November 20 at 7 pm at Sharon Woods Visitors Center. \n  \nMost birders know the importance of wetlands. More than 90% of Ohio’s wetlands have been lost to urban development or draining for conversion to farmland. Wetlands are critical to migratory and breeding birds\, important for recharging our groundwater\, and regulation/absorption of water runoff during heavy downpours\, plus wetlands are great places to go birding! \n  \n  \nBio: Dave Schmitt is the Executive Director of the MCA. Dave is experienced in river conservation\, solid wastewater management\, brownfield remediation\, and the gamut of environmental laws and regulations. \nDave earned a B.S. Biology from Marietta College\, an M.S. in Forestry from the University of Maine\, and J.D. from University of Cincinnati College of Law. Dave practiced environmental law for 25 years with Cors & Bassett\, LLC and has served on boards of several environmental organizations.
