DESCRIPTION:Phenology: Using this age-old science to predict bloom time and insect activity \nPhenology is the study of recurring biological phenomena and their relationship to weather and climate. Bird migration\, hunting and gathering seasons\, blooming of wildflowers and trees\, and the seasonal appearance of insects are examples of phenological events that have been recorded for centuries. Participants will learn how phenology tells us what’s blooming and what insect activity is in the near future. With an easy-to-use web-based biological calendar\, participants will learn how to customize this calendar. \n \n  \nDenise R. Ellsworth is the program Director for Honeybee and Native Pollinator Education at the Ohio State Department of Entomology. SUMMARY:Bender Mountain Wildflower Walk
DESCRIPTION:Spring Ephemeral Walk April 8 11:00am-12:30pm\n\n\n\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJoin Joyce Richter\, Western Wildlife Corridor board member\, naturalist and avid hiker\, as she takes us on a guided walk through the preserve. We should see Blue-eyed Mary carpeting the forest floor\, a variety of Waterleaf species\, and many other blooming understory native wildflowers.This is one of the best places to see this variety and number of our native spring It’s been described as the “best place in Hamilton County to observe native wildflowers” by Dr. Denis Conover\, botanist with the University of Cincinnati.  We recommend sturdy shoes\, a walking stick if you need more stability\, and water.  We will require wearing masks and social distancing during our walk. Limit to 10.\nYou must RSVP to cincinnatiwildones@gmail.com before April 5. \nBender Mountain Preserve is more than fifty acres of wooded hillside between Bender Road and Hillside Avenue.\nThe principal areas of the preserve are owned by Delhi Township and the Western Wildlife Corridor\, who maintain the trails and work to eliminate invasive species throughout the Preserve. Bender Mountain has a range of hiking options from easy to strenuous\, and even includes a long-ago-abandoned stretch of Delhi Pike. Bender Mountain Preserve has over three miles of hiking trails\, some with a fantastic view of the Ohio River. This is a lovely\, heavily wooded\, restored nature preserve that supports hundreds of plant and animal species. It’s been described as the “best place in Hamilton County to observe native wildflowers” by Dr. Denis Conover\, botanist with the University of Cincinnati. SUMMARY:Greg Torres on Planting for Birds
DESCRIPTION:Plants and birds have a long history of working together. As an example of mutualism\, this development and relationship between plants and birds has had far reaching consequences\, encouraging co-evolution that enhanced the survival of both plants and birds. “Planting for Birds” explores some of these relationships\, tips how we can grow plants to create habitats to help birds thrive\, as well as resources for selections of beautiful native plants that support our local ecosystem. \nGreg Torres is a Florida Master Naturalist and a Nationally Certified Interpretive Guide. Here in Cincinnati\, he’s worked for the Cincinnati Zoo\, Cincinnati Parks and most recently as the Horticulturist at the Civic Garden Center. He is President of Northside Greenspace Inc. and a board member of Preserve Burnet Woods\, volunteer organizations committed to the restoration and long-term care of greenspaces. SUMMARY:Spotted Lanternflies
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Julie Urban has been a member of USDA’s Technical Working Group advising USDA and state governments on issues surrounding the invasive Spotted Lanternfly\, Lycorma delicatula\, since this insect was first detected in the US on Sept. 22\, 2014. She will discuss the timeline of this insect’s invasion and how its range and impacts have expanded from 2014 to the present. Dr. Urban will also give an overview of spotted lanternfly biology and progress on research currently underway to better understand and manage this pest. \nDr. Julie Urban is a Research Associate Professor in the Entomology Department at Pennsylvania State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from the University at Albany. She studies planthopper evolution and their co-evolution with multiple bacterial and fungal symbionts. Her recent work involves aspects of basic and applied research on the invasive planthopper\, the Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). She has been a member of USDA’s Technical Working Group of scientists\, advising management and research on the Spotted Lanternfly\, since it was first detected in the US in September\, 2014. Dr. Urban is the lead PI on a regional USDA NIFA Specialty Crops Research Initiative grant studying the biology\, management\, reducing the impact of Spotted Lanternfly in specialty crops in the eastern USA. \nThis will be a Zoom meeting. DESCRIPTION:eBird is one of the largest citizen science efforts in the world and usage has exploded this year with the COVID-19 pandemic. For this zoom program\, Brian Wulker will cover the basics including useful features in eBird along with going over submission guidelines. Brian also plans on going over common errors and how to submit good documentation for rarities. This program should be informative for all local eBird users (ASO members and non-members alike) and will be an opportunity to learn a bit about how the review process works. SUMMARY:ASO Events
DESCRIPTION:ASO provides educational monthly field trips designed to give hands-on experiences in the natural world. In addition to field trips to birding hot spots\, our field trips also focus on the rest of the natural world\, including trees\, wildflowers\, butterflies\, insects\, salamanders and other amphibians and reptiles\, and much more. We concentrate on exploring local habitats; to minimize driving\, most of our field trips are held in the Greater Cincinnati area. In addition to field trips\, we host nine monthly evening programs per year (skipping July\, August and December)\, devoted to topics relating to natural history and conservation. We also host special events\, such as our annual Birding Class\, a hands-on birding ID series taught by experts to people of all ages in the classroom and the field. The Audubon Society of Ohio actively conserves some key properties in the Hamilton County and Adams County areas. These properties provide beneficial habitat for native flora and fauna. We are also involved in many conservation projects\, working cooperatively with other like-minded groups in the area. \nBecause of restrictions due to Covid-19\, we regret that we are not safely able to hold programs or other events at this time.
