SUMMARY:Early Spring Botanical & Bird Walk at Spring Grove Cemetery with Denis Conover
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Early Spring Botanical & Bird Walk \nLocation: Spring Grove Cemetery \nDate: Sunday\, March 16\, 2025 \nMeet: 10:00 A.M. at Spring Grove Cemetery\, along the road just beyond the tunnel from the main entrance on Spring Grove Avenue \nLeader: Denis Conover\, (513) 390-0863\, conovedg@hotmail.com \nMarch can have tricky weather. As the old adage states\, “March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb”. Chances are good that signs of early spring will be present\, if not abundant. Some species of plants are already beginning to bud at this season and according to our trip leader\, Denis Conover\, there should already be a few spring wildflowers popping up. Regardless of the weather\, Denis\, our regular Spring Grove leader\, will focus on whatever nature brings us. Snow will not cancel this field trip. Severe weather of course would cancel the trip. If you are unsure at the time\, don’t hesitate to contact Denis. Denis has become our designated ASO field trip leader for our monthly field trip to Spring Grove Cemetery. He is a UC biology professor an ASO Board Member and an expert botanist and naturalist. And he loves Spring Grove and knows it as well as anyone. \nAs always\, Denis will take us on a walk through the beautiful cemetery grounds and point out the diverse botanical community and seasonal birds found at Spring Grove Cemetery. Denis will identify the tremendous diversity of trees\, shrubs\, and other plants that can be found here and expound on their ecology. He will also point out our native flora\, invasive species\, and ornamental plantings as well as show us some of the champion trees found here. Denis has interests in all aspects of natural history and he will be sure to point out the birds and other fauna we are sure to see. So come along and join Denis on what hopefully will be a pleasant early spring morning walk and gain some tips and insight into plant identification and their natural history as well as winter resident and early spring migrant birds. \nParticipants should be prepared for a few hours of steady walking\, most of which will be relatively flat and on pavement\, but there will also be some walking off pavement on trails or in wet grass or possibly snow. This will be a three to four hour leisurely walk but you can always end your walk whenever you like. Denis is always willing to stay later if anyone wants to go longer. We suggest wearing good waterproof footwear and dress for cold temperatures. Binoculars are not necessary to see plants but are recommended if you have them\, or want to see birds clearly. Restrooms are available at the cemetery office. \nDirections: The Spring Grove Cemetery main entrance is located on Spring Grove Avenue just west of the Winton Road intersection. To find our meeting spot\, drive in through the main entrance gates and go straight. You will go through a short tunnel. Just beyond the tunnel pull over and park on the right side of the road. \nSpring Grove Cemetery website: \nSpring Grove Website \nSpring Grove Cemetery Map: \nSpring Grove Map

SUMMARY:New St. Joseph’s Cemetery And Merlins With Bill Zimmerman
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Wintering Merlins \nLocation: New St. Joseph’s Cemetery (Price Hill) \nDate: Saturday\, February 22\, 2025 \nMeet: 3:45 P.M. at the Bell Tower and Office parking lot located at the Foley Road and Pedretti Avenue entrance to St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The address is 4500 Foley Road. \nLeader: Bill Zimmerman\, (513) 708-8117\, wtvz@icloud.com \nThis will be a short late afternoon field trip. But it may be one you might not want to miss. On this trip it will be highly likely that we will see at least one\, and maybe more\, Merlins. These smallish raptors are rather rare migrants and winter residents in our region of the country\, but their wintering numbers have seemingly increased over the past decade. And they also seem to have a preference for the habitats found in most cemeteries. Merlins are small hawks and included in the falcon family. They are larger than kestrels and smaller than Peregrines. But don’t let their relatively small size fool you. They are very fast fliers and fierce birds of prey that feed on small to medium sized birds. For whatever reason\, they find New St Joseph’s Cemetery suits their needs very well. As many as 4 have been seen there at once. \nWhy so late in the day for this field trip you might ask. During the day these birds hunt over a wide area and can be difficult to find. But they roost overnight at St. Josephs. So the best time to see them is an hour or so before nightfall when they come back to the cemetery to roost for the night. \nOur trip leader is Bill Zimmerman who will explain all of this and more about Merlins when we meet. Bill is an exceptional birder and all around naturalist. Bill lives nearby the cemetery and has made it a point to monitor these birds over the past many winters. He has recorded a lot of important data over those years. Several years ago Bill began what has become an annual Winter Merlin Survey in the Greater Cincinnati area held on one day in February. The results of these surveys has given us much information regarding wintering Merlin populations in our area. \nBill’s plan is to meet in the Bell Tower and Office parking lot\, located at the Foley Road & Pedretti Avenue entrance. There he will give us a brief overview of Merlins. Bill will then lead us through the cemetery as we look for these birds. We will of course find other species of wintering birds as we move through the grounds. Bill may have us drive into the heart of the cemetery\, but expect some light walking on cemetery roads. \nRemember to dress appropriately for cold weather with decent foot wear. You will need binoculars to see birds well. This trip will end when the cemetery closes at 5 PM. Severe weather will cancel this trip. Contact Bill if you are unsure or have any other questions. \nNew St Joseph’s address: \n4500 Foley Road \nCincinnati\, OH 45238 \nNew St. Joseph’s Cemetery website (with map) \nhttps://www.stjoenew.com/ \n \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Amphibian Event February/March 2025
DESCRIPTION:Date: To Be Determined February/March 2025 \nTime: After 7:00 PM \nLocation: East Fork State Park Camping Area Parking Lot. \nJoin the Audubon Society of Ohio (Cincinnati) and the Greater Cincinnati Herpetological Society for a night out searching East Fork State Park for salamanders\, frogs and anything else we can find. \nIf the conditions are right we can expect to see various salamanders including Spotted\, Jefferson’s\, Streamside\, Two-lined\, Eastern Newts and others that come out on warm rainy nights in late February and March looking for places to breed and lay eggs. While the salamanders are on the move we can also expect to find Spring Peepers\, Western Chorus Frogs\, Wood Frogs\, American Toads and others that are also breeding and laying eggs. Warm is a relative term with nights 40F or above fitting the bill and a steady rain is required. Salamanders and frogs are utilizing the vernal pools created by the rains to lay their eggs. We can also expect to see egg masses left by salamanders in the vernal pools. \nIt is very difficult to predict when conditions will be right for amphibians to move so we are going to try something different this year. Anyone interested in attending this event will need to email me (Bill Stanley tyrannus58@gmail.com) your name and email address. When it appears that the conditions are going be right I will send an email out notifying the group that we will be meeting at East Fork. I will try to do this on a Friday or Saturday night so more can attend\, but this event is driven by weather and I might not be able to choose a weekend night. \nDress for the weather! It will be raining and cold. Bring a flashlight and extra batteries. This trip requires a lot of walking at a slow pace. The complete route is will be about 5 miles. If the distance is to far you are welcome to do a portion of the walk. \nTo make this event a success and continue to do it in the future we need to put the WELFARE OF THE ANIMALS FIRST. The salamanders and frogs are small\, slow and we look for them on wet roads in the dark making it difficult to see them. We have to take care not to step on them. These are wild animals and though they are easy to catch they should not be handled. We will not be picking up these animals\, but if it is necessary to handle them then clean rubber gloves should be used or hand sanitizer should be used before and after handling an animal. Various diseases and fungi can be transferred from one animal to another through improper handling. \nThis will be an exciting night out and you will observe things that not many people get to see so sign up and come out to get a unique view of the world of some of our local salamanders and frogs. \nBill Stanley \ntyrannus58@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Brookville Lake Area Waterfowl & Late Fall Migrants with Jay Stenger and Ryan Jorgensen
DESCRIPTION:Brookville Lake Area \nWaterfowl & Late Fall Migrants \nDate: Sunday\, November 24\, 2023 \nCo-Leader: Jay Stenger\, (513) 522-8147\, jaystenger1@gmail.com \nCo-Leader: Ryan Jorgensen\, (630) 333-2631\, jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com \nMeet: 7:30 a.m. at the Park & Ride Lot at I-275 Exit # 7. See directions below. \nThe focus of this trip will be the fall waterfowl migration\, which should be near peak at this date. The general plan is to visit several spots around Brookville Lake and\, if time permits\, make the short hop over to Hueston Woods before returning home. Both of these locations are hotspots and are excellent for attracting waterfowl and water birds at this season. The rural countryside surrounding these two large lakes has diverse habitats so we expect to find a great variety and diversity of species throughout the day. In addition to many species of waterfowl (ducks & geese) we also expect to see loons\, grebes\, gulls\, Sandhill Cranes\, late shorebirds (such as Dunlin & Wilson’s Snipe)\, good numbers of Bald Eagles\, many hawks\, numbers of seasonal songbirds and much more. Rare species are always possible at this season. Prairie Falcon and Golden Eagle have been seen on this trip in past years. \nOur trip leaders\, Jay Stenger and Ryan Jorgenson are ASO board members and exceptional birders with excellent field skills. Jay also know the Brookville region intimately\, so we can expect to find a great diversity of seasonal species. This will be an auto type tour and will consist of driving from spot to spot\, interspersed with a few short easy walks. While this trip does entail considerable driving\, the rewards\, in terms of what we see\, always make this trip well worth the effort. \nThe trip will run into mid afternoon\, but of course you can leave at any time you like. Bring your lunch and drinks. It always seems colder around large lakes so dress accordingly. If you have a scope it will prove useful. Restrooms will be available throughout the day. One important note\, Indiana State Parks charges a daily per car entrance fee ($7 resident\, $9 non-resident). At this time of year there are usually no attendants on duty but we cannot be sure of that. If you have any questions about this trip feel free to contact Jay or Ryan at their contacts listed above. \nDirections: We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the park & ride lot\, located right at the I-275 Exit # 7 at SR 128\, marked Cleves-Hamilton. This is the first exit just west of the Great Miami River at Miamitown. We will caravan from there to the Brookville area\, about a 30-minute drive. \nFor a map and other info visit the Brookville Lake website at: \nhttp://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2961.htm \nVisit the Whitewater Memorial State Park (at Brookville Lake) website at: \nhttp://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2962.htm \nVisit the Hueston Woods SP website at: \nhttps://ohiodnr.gov/wps/portal/gov/odnr/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/hueston-woods-state-park \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger) \n

SUMMARY:November Program- Wetlands and the Mill Creek Alliance with Dave Schmitt
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nPresented by Dave Schmitt \nSharon Woods Visitor Center \nIn 1997\, Mill Creek was named “the most endangered urban river in North America” by American Rivers and considered irremediable by many. \nThey were wrong! \nAs a result of 30 years of dedicated work by the non-profit Mill Creek Alliance and many partners and volunteers\, Mill Creek has made a stunning recovery. Dozens of stream restoration projects\, hundreds of cleanups\, tens of thousands of trees planted\, aggressive independent water quality monitoring\, watershed-wide environmental education\, and multiple recreational opportunities have resulted in a stream and watershed that has once again become an amenity for the entire region\, and which can serve as as catalyst for multiple future benefits for some of our most under served communities. \n  \nMill Creek Alliance has completed one large wetlands restoration project in West Chester Township which is already attracting a lot of birds. An even larger wetlands restoration project on property immediately upstream from the first is currently out to bid\, and will be constructed in 2025. \n  \nFind out more! Audubon Society of Ohio welcomes Dave Schmitt\, Executive Director of Mill Creek Alliance\, this Wednesday evening November 20 at 7 pm at Sharon Woods Visitors Center. \n  \nMost birders know the importance of wetlands. More than 90% of Ohio’s wetlands have been lost to urban development or draining for conversion to farmland. Wetlands are critical to migratory and breeding birds\, important for recharging our groundwater\, and regulation/absorption of water runoff during heavy downpours\, plus wetlands are great places to go birding! \n  \n  \nBio: Dave Schmitt is the Executive Director of the MCA. Dave is experienced in river conservation\, solid wastewater management\, brownfield remediation\, and the gamut of environmental laws and regulations. \nDave earned a B.S. Biology from Marietta College\, an M.S. in Forestry from the University of Maine\, and J.D. from University of Cincinnati College of Law. Dave practiced environmental law for 25 years with Cors & Bassett\, LLC and has served on boards of several environmental organizations.

SUMMARY:Late Fall Botanical & Bird Walk at Spring Grove Cemetery with Denis Conover
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Late Fall Botanical & Bird Walk \nLocation: Spring Grove Cemetery \nDate: Sunday\, November 17\, 2024 \nMeet: 10:00 A.M. at Spring Grove Cemetery\, along the road just beyond the tunnel from the main entrance on Spring Grove Avenue \nLeader: Denis Conover\, (513) 390-0863\, conovedg@hotmail.com \n. \nSome people think of November as a cold and dreary month but I would disagree. I think late autumn is a beautiful time of the year and the subtle hues of the landscape interspersed with late fall colors offer up a stark beauty. \nOur field trip leader\, noted botanist Denis Conover\, agrees with me and as always\, he will point out the diverse botanical community found at Spring Grove Cemetery. Denis has become our regular ASO field trip leader for Spring Grove. Denis is an ASO Board Member\, a UC biology professor\, and an expert botanist and naturalist. So come along and join Denis as he leads us on a mid-morning autumnal walk through the beautiful grounds of Spring Grove Cemetery. \nDenis will identify the tremendous diversity of trees\, shrubs\, fallen leaves and other plants that can be found here and expound on their ecology. Denis will also point out our native flora\, invasive species\, and ornamental plantings as well as show us some of the champion trees found here. Denis has interests in all aspects of natural history and he will be sure to point out the birds and other fauna we are sure to see. So come along and join Denis to see the fall foliage on what should be a beautiful autumnal morning and gain some tips and insight on plant identification and their natural history. Late migrant songbirds and new winter arrivals will also be seen. \nParticipants should be prepared for a few hours of steady walking\, most of which will be relatively flat and on pavement\, but there will also be some walking off pavement on trails or in damp or wet grass. This will be a three to four hour walk. Denis is always willing to stay later if anyone wants to go longer. We suggest wearing good waterproof footwear and dress for cool to cold temperatures. Binoculars are not necessary to see plants but are recommended if you have them\, or want to see birds clearly. Restrooms are available at the cemetery office. Denis says rain will not cancel this trip. If you have any questions feel free to contact Denis. \nDirections: The Spring Grove Cemetery main entrance is located on Spring Grove Avenue just west of the Winton Road intersection. To find our meeting spot\, drive in through the main entrance gates and go straight. You will go through a short tunnel. Just beyond the tunnel\, pull over and park alongside the right side of the road. \nSpring Grove Cemetery website: \nhttps://www.springgrove.org/locations/spring-grove-cemetery-arboretum/ \nSpring Grove Cemetery Map: \nhttps://www.springgrove.org/resource/maps/ \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Late Fall Migration and Nature Walk at East Fork State Park with Bill Stanley
DESCRIPTION:Late Fall Migration and Nature Walk \nLocation: East Fork State Park \nDate: Saturday\, October 26\, 2024 \nMeet: 8:00 A.M. at the East Fork State Parks south Swimming Beach parking lot\, nearest the Pavilion (see the directions below). \nLeader: Bill Stanley\, (513) 324-2796\, tyrannus58@gmail.com \nJoin our trip leader Bill Stanley for what should be a great day of birding at East Fork State Park during a beautiful time of the year. Bill is an expert birder and skilled naturalist and a board member of our Audubon Society. Bill has been a fixture in our birding and conservation community since he joined the Cincinnati Zoo’s Jr\, Zoologist Program as a young teenager. October is a beautiful month and autumn color should be near peak on this date. October is also centered in the middle of fall migration and because of that it offers somewhat of a mixed bag of species. East Fork SP and Harsha Lake is an excellent spot to find this diversity of species. \nWhile neotropic migration is over by this date\, there are several species of late fall migrant songbirds moving through. These numbers are augmented by the new arrivals of our wintering species. Shorebird migration is slowing down by this date\, but a few of those species should still be around. Waterfowl migration will be close to peak on this date which is also true of gulls\, grebes\, loons and a number of other species of water birds. Raptors are on the move throughout the month and Bald Eagles should be expected. And there is always a chance for a rarity\, as East Fork has an excellent reputation in that regard\, particularly in the fall. \nBill\, who lives nearby\, knows East Fork SP as well as anyone and plans to visit several different locations and habitats within the park. This will entail driving to a few different spots\, interspersed with light walking at a birders pace between. While we will walk a bit during the morning\, it will be moderate and at a leisurely pace over mostly level trails and roadsides. Bill will probably stay at it until birding begins to tail off around noon. So come and join Bill for some great birding on what should be a beautiful autumnal morning. This trip will probably end around noon or so. Restrooms are available in the park. Dress for the weather\, it is always colder close to the water. If you have scopes bring them. If you have any questions feel free to contact Bill. \nDirections: \nWe will meet at the Parks south swimming beach parking lot\, nearest to the Pavilion. To get to the East Fork SP south entrance from I-275\, take exit # 65\, SR 125 (Beechmont Ave./Ohio Pike) and go east about 9 miles to the junction of Rt. 222. Turn left onto Old State Rte. 125 (opposite Rt. 222) and follow the signs to the Park entrance. Follow the Park Road (and signs) to the East Fork SP Swimming Beach. Meet in the Parking Lot nearest the Pavilion. \nVisit the East Fork State Park website for a Park map and other info at: \nhttps://ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-fork-state-park \nHere is a google maps link to the meeting location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4JxpdckyTMm7Jtjv8 \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:October Program – Julie Zickefoose
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 17 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\n\n\n\n\nBooks\, Birds\, and Following Passion’s Path\n\nPresented by Julie Zickefoose\n\nThursday\, October 17th 2024\, 7:00 p.m.\n\nSharon Woods Visitor Center\n\n\n\n\nBooks\, Birds and Following Passion’s Path  \n  \nThis talk is an origin story; a close look at the making of a natural history writer and illustrator. It follows the threads of inspiration from formative books and influential artists in Julie’s early years\, to the creation of her own books. Zickefoose tracks in intimate detail the exceptionally close interactions she has with birds under her study and care. These experiences have given her deep insight into the way birds think and see the world. “There’s no better way to come to know a bird than to be its mama. Then\, to let it go and watch it learn to navigate its world and become what it was meant to be—this is how I come to understand birds: from their beginnings on outward.” \n  \nIllustrated with the author’s own photographs\, drawings and paintings\, this lecture brings viewers into Julie’s world\, and that of the birds she has come to know. A brood of Carolina wrens: ferociously intelligent\, surprisingly affectionate\, inventive and comical\, consumed Julie’s summer in 2023. You’ll leave with a far greater appreciation of these small brown birds\, and all birds\, who have been Julie’s best instructors in the ways of the wild. \n  \nBio: \nJulie Zickefoose lives and works quietly on an 80-acre wildlife sanctuary in the back country of Whipple\, Ohio. She is a prolific writer and painter who was an All Things Considered commentator for five years. Her illustrated work\, The Bluebird Effect\, was an Oprah’s Book Club pick in 2012.  After 37 years of contributing art and writing to Bird Watcher’s Digest\, Julie recently became Advising Editor to the new and improved BWD Magazine. Her heavily illustrated books include Natural Gardening for Birds\, Letters from Eden\, The Bluebird Effect\, and Baby Birds: An Artist Looks Into the Nest. Her newest book is Saving Jemima: Life and Love With a Hard-Luck Jay\, the intimate story of how an orphaned bird can save a soul.\n\nSharon Woods Visitors Center is located at 11450 Lebanon Road\, Sharonville\, Ohio 45241 (0.8 miles) south of I-275

SUMMARY:Botanical and Migrant Bird Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Location: Spring Grove Cemetery \nDate: Sunday\, September 29th\, 2024 \nMeet: 9:00 A.M. at Spring Grove Cemetery\, along the road just beyond the tunnel from the main entrance on Spring Grove Avenue \nLeader: Denis Conover\, (513) 390-0863\, conovedg@hotmail.com \nThe focus of this field trip will be the diverse botanical community found at Spring Grove Cemetery as well as the fall migration of birds. Come out and join ASO Board Member\, UC professor\, and expert botanist and naturalist Denis Conover as he leads us on an early autumnal morning walk through the beautiful grounds of Spring Grove Cemetery. This is a beautiful time of the year and the fall color season should just be getting under way. \nThe southbound migration of songbirds (including warblers) and other species will still be underway. Our leader Denis is known foremost as a botanist but he has a great love and knowledge of birds of which many species should be seen. As we walk Denis will also identify the tremendous diversity of trees\, shrubs\, leaves and other plants that can be found here and expound on their ecology. Denis will also point out our native flora\, invasive species\, ornamental plantings and early fall color as well as show us some of the national and state champion trees found here. Denis has a great interests in all aspects of natural history and he will be sure to point out any other fauna we are sure to run across. So why not come along and join Denis on what should be a glorious fall morning and gain some tips and insight on birds and plant identification and their natural history. \nParticipants should be prepared for a few hours of steady walking\, most of which will be relatively flat and on pavement and at a leisurely pace. But there will also be some walking off pavement on trails or in damp or wet grass. This field trip will be about a four hour walk. Of course participants can leave at any point they would like. We suggest wearing good waterproof footwear (wet/damp grass). Binoculars are not necessary to see plants but are recommended if you want to see birds clearly. Restrooms are available at the cemetery office. Just beyond the tunnel\, pull over and park alongside the right side of the road and look for Denis. \nSpring Grove Cemetery website: \nhttps://www.springgrove.org/locations/spring-grove-cemetery-arboretum/ \nSpring Grove Cemetery Map: \nhttps://www.springgrove.org/resource/maps/ \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Fall Birding and Herping Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Location: Spring Valley Wildlife Area/Caesar Creek State Park \nDate: Sunday\, September 22\, 2024 \nMeet: At 8:00 A.M. in the swimming beach Parking Lot at Caesar Creek State Park. See directions below. \nLeader: Ryan Jorgensen\, (630) 333-2631\, jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com \nThis trip will focus on the fall migration of birds as it is scheduled during the middle of September which represents the peak of fall migration for songbirds\, shorebirds and many other species of birds. But the trip will equally focus on finding and identifying reptiles and amphibians\, or “herps” as many naturalists refer to them (from herpetology). This group of animals includes snakes\, turtles\, lizards (reptiles) and frogs\, toads and salamanders (amphibians). Our chances of success are very good because our field trip leader\, Ryan Jorgensen\, is not just a skilled birder but is an expert herpetologist and naturalist as well. Ryan is also a board member of our Audubon Society. He has a Master’s degree in Biological Science at UC where he specialized in herpetology. His research is on snakes and particularly their muscular activity during locomotion. Ryan is also an avid and skilled birder and will help us find and identify what should be a great diversity of species. \nMany of us know SVWA as a great birding area but the varied habitats found in this 842 acre wildlife area are also perfect for reptiles and amphibians. The shallow lake with dense emergent vegetation\, the extensive marsh\, the shallow Little Miami River\, the wooded riparian bottoms and hardwood hillsides and dense brushy edges offer excellent bird habitat\, but it is also a perfect habitat for a diversity of herp species. After cool night temperatures\, these cold-blooded creatures become active as the day warms up\, seeking places to sun and bask\, making them much easier to find and see. \nRyan plans to walk the loop trail investigating and probing all the hidden spots where our subjects may be hiding or basking. While there are never any guarantees\, Ryan knows how to find herps\, so expectations are high. Ryan will most likely spot several species of herps and he may catch a few to boot. SVWA is also famous as one of the few places in Ohio that the eastern massasauga rattlesnake is found\, although it is in serious decline here and throughout the Midwest. \nThe date of this trip is set right in the middle of fall migration and a diverse group of birds should also be found. We expect to find migrant songbirds (including many warblers)\, shorebirds on the mudflats\, early season waterfowl\, other water and marsh birds\, Bald Eagle\, Osprey and other raptors. A pair of Sandhill Cranes nested here this summer and had two offspring\, all four of which are often seen at the edge of the marsh. \nThis trip will consist totally of walking the loop trail around the marsh which is a little over two miles long. But walking will be leisurely and over flat terrain with lots of stops to view wildlife. Parts of the trails may be damp or wet\, so waterproof footwear is advised. Binoculars are necessary to see birds well and are also highly advised. To make your trip more comfortable we suggest bringing water. There are no restrooms available at SVWA\, but there is plenty of privacy in the woods. Restrooms are available at Caesar Creek SP where we will meet. This trip is expected to last at least until noon. Come on out and join Ryan for what should prove to be a unique field trip on what will likely be a beautiful autumnal day. If you have any questions feel free to contact Ryan. \nDirections: To get to Caesar Creek State Park from Cincinnati\, take I-71 north from its intersection with I-275 and drive about 34 miles north to SR 73 (exit # 45). Turn left/west onto SR 73 and go about 5.4 miles to the Caesar Creek SP entrance. Turn right into the Park and follow signs to the swimming beach. Look for our leader Ryan parked near the north end of the beach. It is a large parking lot but Ryan should be easy to spot at this time of day. Ryan will caravan us over to nearby Spring Valley WA from there. \nThe ODNR Spring Valley WA website (includes a map) \nhttps://ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/spring-valley-wildlife-area \nSVWA Map: \nhttps://ohiodnr.gov/static/documents/wildlife/wildlife-area-maps/springvalley.pdf \nCaesar Creek State Park: \nhttps://ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/caesar-creek-state-park \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Walk at Fernald Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Greater Cincinnati Wild Ones will have a naturalist-led tour at Fernald Preserve on Saturday\, September 14\, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, followed by lunch (your own!) indoors at the visitor center. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes and bringing a refillable water bottle. If you want to join us after the hike\, bring your lunch and join us in the beautiful visitor center. \nFernald Preserve has a unique history and was once a uranium processing plant. It closed in 1989 when a comprehensive environmental cleanup began\, including the planting of many native trees and grasses to restore the ecology.  Today\, it encompasses 1\,050 acres of upland forest\, grassland\, and wetlands. The diversity of wildlife inhabiting the preserve attests to the success of the reclamation activities. \nAlthough Fernald Preserve is an “undeveloped” park\, visitors can enjoy seven miles of trails. These trails range from short\, gravel paths near the visitor center to longer\, more rugged trails that travel through the various habitats found in Fernald. A viewing blind and overlooks provide opportunities to observe native flora and fauna. Over 240 species of birds have been recorded at Fernald Preserve\, along with butterflies\, amphibians\, reptiles\, and mammals. \nFernald Preserve includes a visitor center with exhibits designed by faculty and students at the University of Cincinnati College of Design\, Architecture\, Art & Planning (DAAP). The outstanding exhibits illustrate the history of the Fernald site including the Native Americans who first lived there\, its role in the Cold War\, and its environmental cleanup. The visitor center was the first building in Ohio to achieve platinum LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

SUMMARY:ASO September 8th 2024 Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Fall Migration; Warblers & Shorebirds \nSunday\, September 8\, 2024\, 8:00 A.M. \nMeet: At the Shawnee Lookout boat ramp upper parking lot. The upper parking lot is located directly across from the Shawnee Lookout Park entrance. (See directions below) \nLeader: Ann Oliver\, (513) 307-0929\, annieobirder@yahoo.com \nAn excellent argument can be made that\, after May\, September is the next best birding month in our region\, at least in terms of the greatest number of species one could find in a given month. September represents the peak of fall migration for both song birds (especially warblers) and shorebirds. Numbers of other species such as early waterfowl\, long-legged waders\, tern’s\, raptors and others also migrate south during this month. Fall migration will be in full swing on this date and finding a diversity of species will be the primary focus on this field trip. \nOur trip leader is Ann Oliver\, an expert and skilled birder. Ann is also a long time Audubon advocate and board member. With Ann’s birding skills and the peak of fall migration\, we can expect to find a wide variety of birds. Ann will begin this field trip at the Shawnee Lookout Park entrance to take advantage of migrant songbirds\, especially warblers. \nSince our primary focus of this field trip is the fall migration of warblers and other songbirds\, Ann will spend most of the morning at Shawnee Lookout. Depending on time and current birding reports\, Ann may lead us to another nearby spot or two such as the Lost Bridge area or the Oxbow to look for migrating shorebirds and other water birds. \nThe diverse habitats of these excellent birding sites at this time of the year should yield a great diversity of species. Warblers and many other song birds should be abundant. Shorebirds\, herons & egrets\, terns\, and other water birds could be seen in nearby locations. Hawks\, including Osprey & Bald Eagles\, are all likely to be found during this morning trip. \nThe plan is to bird until around noon. There will be quite a bit of walking on this trip\, but most of it will be generally easy and at a comfortable birding pace. Binoculars are necessary if you expect to see birds. Restrooms are available at Shawnee Lookout. A Hamilton County Park Motor Vehicle Permit is required at all Hamilton County Parks. Daily Motor Vehicle Permits can be purchased for $5 for Hamilton County residents and $8 for non-residents at park entrance booths ($10 & $16 annual). Please feel free to contact Ann if you have any questions. \nDirections to Shawnee Lookout Park: We will meet at the Shawnee Lookout boat ramps upper parking lot at 8:00 a.m. The upper parking lot is located directly across from the Shawnee Lookout Park entrance. Shawnee Lookout is located at 2008 Lawrenceburg Rd. North Bend\, Ohio. Take I-275 to the Kilby Road Exit # 21. Turn south on Kilby Road and go about 1 mile to the stop light at U.S. 50. Turn right onto US 50 and go about 2 miles to the stop light at Lawrenceburg Road and turn left. Follow Lawrenceburg Road to the stop sign at the end of the Great Miami Bridge (Lost Bridge)\, turn right and go about 1.5 miles to the park entrance which is on the left. The upper boat ramp parking lot where we will meet is on the right\, directly across from the Park entrance. \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)
