SUMMARY:A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds With Sophie A. H. Osborn
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, October 16\, 2025 \nTime: 7 pm \nLocation: Sharon Centre and Zoom \nSpeaker: Sophie A. H. Osborn \nBirds are visible\, vocal sentinels that alert us to environmental harms through their declining numbers or their failure to thrive. In her book Feather Trails—A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds\, Sophie Osborn shares her personal experiences reintroducing endangered Peregrine Falcons\, Hawaiian Crows\, and California Condors to the wild. While immersing readers in the triumphs and tribulations of being a wildlife biologist\, Sophie explores the threats that imperiled these birds\, and reveals that what harmed them threatens us\, too. She will discuss what led to the endangerment of these three captivating species\, recount the efforts of biologists to recover their populations\, and read a few excerpts from her book that describe what it was like to work with these magnificent birds. \nSophie A. H. Osborn is an award-winning environmental writer and wildlife biologist whose work has included the study and conservation of more than a dozen bird species in the Americas. She contributed to reintroduction efforts for several endangered birds and served as the field manager for the California Condor Recovery Program in Arizona for four years. Her first book\, Condors in Canyon Country\, won the 2007 National Outdoor Book Award for Nature and the Environment. Reviewers for the American Birding Association (ABA) chose her second book\, Feather Trails\, as their favorite bird book of 2024. Sophie has written articles for BirdWatching\, Wyoming Wildlife\, and Sojourns magazines. Her writings are also available on her website (https://www.wordsforbirds.net/) and her “Words for Birds” Substack blog. \n  \nThis Meeting is in person and Zoom. The Sophie is not local so she will present via Zoom which we can watch together on the big screen at Sharon Centre or you can watch from home. \nHere is the Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/92439072826?pwd=SQxNEaqfy2NghfzrbNqlRs46XVuBlE.1       Participants will be admitted to the program starting around 6:50 pm \n

SUMMARY:2025 Audubon Society of Ohio Bird Course
DESCRIPTION:2025 ASO Bird Course \nThree Sunday Mornings\, 19th\, 26th & November 2nd\, 2025 \nHone your birding and identification skills by registering for the 36th annual Audubon Birding Course. Our local Cincinnati Audubon Society Chapter (ASO) has been sponsoring this class since 1987. The three-week course will be held on three consecutive Sunday mornings. This year’s dates are; October 19th\, October 26th and November 2nd. Father-son team Jay Stenger and Jack Stenger will again be this year’s instructors. Both Jay and Jack are well known and exceptionally knowledgeable birders. Jay has been an instructor for this course since its inception in 1987 and Jack for over 18 years. The course will be held at the Fernald Preserve Visitor Center. Fernald Preserve is located in northwestern Hamilton County. The entrance is located at 7400 Wiley Road\, about ¼ of a mile west of State Route 128. Follow the entrance road to the Visitor Center. You can visit the Fernald Preserve website for further information at https://www.energy.gov/lm/fernald-preserve-ohio-site \nEach class will begin at 8 AM with a casual class-room session that includes a continental breakfast. The classroom sessions will be followed by a field trip on the Preserves grounds or to a nearby local hot spot\, usually wrapping up about 1 PM. The field trip locations will be determined by current birding conditions and the interests of the participants. \nThrough discussions\, visual and audio presentations and field observations\, the course will particularly focus on sharpening identification skills. But the course will offer much more than that. When\, where and how to find birds in our area is also prioritized. Other course topics will include migration\, bird abundance and distribution\, habitat\, conservation\, local hotspots\, birding equipment and resources. The setting is informal and questions are encouraged. Jay and Jack also infuse a lot of fun\, levity and enthusiasm throughout. \nThis course is geared towards all birding levels. While mid-level birders may gain the most from this course\, most birders\, beginners and experienced alike\, will find that this course will help hone their ID skills and add to their knowledge of local birds. Over 700 area birders have taken this course over the years and have found it entertaining and informative. The course is open to everyone\, including older kids if accompanied by an adult. Binoculars are required and a field guide will be useful to refer to in class and in the field. If you do not have a pair of binoculars\, the ASO can lend you a pair during the course. \nCourse fees are $20 for ASO members and $35 for non-members which include a $15 annual membership in ASO. The course will be limited to a maximum of 30 participants. To register and pay online use the following link \nhttps://cincinnatiaudubon.regfox.com/audubon-bird-class-2025 \n \n \nRegistration is limited to 30 participants. If the event is full\, email Jay Stenger at jaystenger1@gmail.com to be placed on a waiting list. If you have any questions contact Jay. \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Otto Armleder Memorial Park With Lisa Conner
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Mid Fall Bird Walk \nLocation: Otto Armleder Memorial Park \nDate: Saturday\, November 1st\, 2025 \nMeet: At 8:00 AM at the Main Pavilion Parking Lot at Armleder Park (See directions below) \nLeader: Lisa Conner\, (765) 337-4669\, lmconner14@gmail.com \nArmleder Park in jointly managed by the Hamilton County Great Parks and the Cincinnati City Parks. This 305 acre park has developed an excellent birding reputation\, mostly due to its unique habitats. The park lies in a flood plain along the west bank of the Little Miami River\, about a mile north of its confluence with the Ohio River. The park is prone to flooding\, which can be good for water birds but difficult to access at those times. The park also has a sizeable amount of open space\, including grassland and weedy fields\, an uncommon habitat in the Greater Cincinnati area. This in turn attracts many open country and grassland species. The wooded riparian corridor and sandbars along the Little Miami are very attractive to a number of birds. Brushy woodland edges\, athletic fields and abandoned gravel pits\, at least one which is permanently filled with water\, round out the habitats. All of this attracts a great diversity of species throughout the various seasons. Many trails meander through the park. \nOur trip leader\, Lisa Conner\, is a skilled birder and naturalist and is also a current and valued board member of our Audubon Society. Lisa’s plan is to walk the trails through the diverse habitats this Park has to offer. We expect to find an abundance of late fall migrants\, winter residents and permanent residents. A variety of a diverse seasonal birds should be seen. Bald Eagles (a pair nests nearby) are also likely. While birds will be our main focus\, Lisa will not ignore any other aspects of nature we find along the way. So come on out with us and join Lisa for what should be an interesting morning walk in a unique park. If time permits\, Lisa may take a short side trip to another nearby birding hotspot\, depending upon birding reports closer to the date. \nVirtually all of this trip will be on foot\, but walking will be easy to moderate and at a birders pace over mostly level terrain. As always\, be prepared for muddy spots\, especially if conditions have been wet. Expect cold temperatures and dress accordingly. Good footwear will make your walk more enjoyable. It should go without saying that binoculars are necessary for seeing birds well. Restrooms are available at Armleder. This field trip will end sometime around noon. If you have any questions about this trip feel free to contact Lisa at her contacts listed above. \nDirections: \nOtto Armleder Park is located at 5057 Wooster Pike\, Cincinnati\, OH 45226. It is located directly north of Lunken Airport and Beechmont Avenue\, but can only be accessed from Wooster Pike. You can access Wooster Pike and Armleder Park from Columbia Parkway (US 50)\, and Red Bank Road from the north or Beechmont Avenue (Rt. 125) or Wilmer Avenue from the south. From Wooster Pike\, turn into Otto Armleder Park and follow the Park road straight to the stop sign at the T intersection. Then go straight ahead\, into the main Pavilion Parking lot where we will meet. \nOtto Armleder Website (Includes Google Directions & Park Map) \nhttps://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/cincyparks/visit-a-park/find-a-parkfacility/otto-armleder-memorial-park/ \nThe meeting place can be found here: Otto Armleder Pavilion \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Late Fall Botanical & Bird Walk With Denis Conover
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Late Fall Botanical & Bird Walk \nLocation: Spring Grove Cemetery \nDate: Sunday\, November 9th\, 2025 \nMeet: 10:00 A.M. at Spring Grove Cemetery\, along the road just beyond the tunnel from the main entrance on Spring Grove Avenue \nLeader: Denis Conover\, (513) 390-0863\, conovedg@hotmail.com \nJoin us for our monthly field trip to Spring Grove Cemetery. The trees and shrubs on this beautiful property should still be showing some brilliant fall colors on this date. Who better to answer our questions concerning how trees and other plants prepare for winter than our regular Spring Grove field trip leader\, noted botanist Denis Conover. Denis will focus on fall color and the seasonal change that all plants go through and will point out the diverse botanical community found at Spring Grove Cemetery. Denis is an ASO Board Member\, a UC biology professor\, and an expert botanist and naturalist. \nDenis will identify the tremendous diversity of trees\, shrubs\, fallen leaves and other plants that can be found here and expound on their ecology. Denis will also point out our native flora\, invasive species\, and ornamental plantings as well as show us some of the champion trees found here. Denis has interests in all aspects of natural history and he will be sure to point out the birds and other fauna we are sure to see. So come along and join Denis to see the fall foliage on what should be a beautiful autumnal morning and gain some tips and insight on plant identification and their natural history. Late migrant songbirds and new winter arrivals should be plentiful and many should be seen. \nParticipants should be prepared for a few hours of steady walking\, most of which will be relatively flat and on pavement\, but there will also be some walking off pavement on trails or in damp or wet grass. This will be a three to four walk. Denis is always willing to stay later if anyone wants to go longer. We suggest wearing good waterproof footwear and dress for cool to cold temperatures. Binoculars are not necessary to see plants but are recommended if you have them\, or want to see birds clearly. Restrooms are available at the cemetery office. Denis says rain will not cancel this trip. If you have any questions feel free to contact Denis. \nDirections: The Spring Grove Cemetery main entrance is located on Spring Grove Avenue just west of the Winton Road intersection. To find our meeting spot\, drive in through the main entrance gates and go straight. You will go through a short tunnel. SUMMARY:Cincinnati Bird Window Collisions: A Study in Bird Mortality and Building Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Cincinnati Bird Window Collisions: A Study in Bird Mortality and Building Mitigation \nPresenter: Dr. Ron Canterbury \nDate: Thursday November 20\, 2025 \nTime: 7PM \nLocation: Sharon Center at Sharon Woods or on Zoom \n  \nEvery year an estimated ONE BILLION birds collide with windows in the United States alone! Due to their inability to detect glass facades on our many homes\, buildings\, and other glass structures\, they often do not survive these encounters with these man-made barriers. In the midst of a loss of 3 billion North American birds since 1970\, collisions with human structures figure to be a large contributor to the loss of our avian friends. \nLocally\, many birds perish as they pass over the glass-crowned hilltops of Clifton\, as well as other heavily built-up corridors\, such as downtown and the riverfront. Dr. Ron Canterbury\, an ornithologist at the University of Cincinnati\, has taken action to document and address this problem locally. Dr. Canterbury has been documenting window collision mortality on the UC campus for well over a decade\, and has also been monitoring local bird populations through other means\, such as leg banding. Please join us at 7pm the evening of Thursday\, November 20th at the Sharon Centre to hear Dr. Canterbury discuss window collisions and methods that can be taken to reduce the threats of glass on your property. He will also give us updates of the progress he has made in making the UC campus bird safe and any ways you may be able to contribute to making Cincinnati more bird-friendly! \nThis meeting is in person at Sharon Centre and on zoom as well. \nThe Meeting Place can be found here: Sharon Centre \nThe zoom invite for those who want to attend from home is: https://zoom.us/j/99976125788 \nPlease wait until 6:50 before clicking the link.  You will be admitted when the program is ready to begin. \n  \nContributed by Ryan Jorgenson

SUMMARY:Monthly Spring Grove Cemetery Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Location: Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum\nDate: Sunday\, January 18\, 2026\nMeet: At 10:00 A.M. at Spring Grove Cemetery. Park along the main road\, just beyond the tunnel from the main entrance on Spring Grove Avenue (see directions below).\nLeader: Denis Conover\, (513) 390-0863\, conovedg@hotmail.com \nSpring Grove Cemetery is one of Cincinnati’s most beautiful natural settings and its designation as an arboretum is well deserved. A tremendous diversity and number of native and ornamental plants can be found here. Our monthly field trips here will be general nature walks that will focus on botany and birds and all other aspects of nature we come across. \nOver the years our trip leader\, Denis Conover\, has become our go to guy when botany is the theme of our field trips and we are fortunate to have him share his knowledge with us. Denis is a professor in the department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cincinnati and has been involved in various types of botanical research since 1981. Denis is also a current board member of our local Audubon Society of Ohio and also has a great interest in birds and will equally focus on them. \nDenis’s usual plan is to take us on a long but leisurely late morning walk through the cemetery observing plants\, birds and other wildlife. Each season offers its own diversity of migrant\, summer and winter resident species of birds and plants in varying stages of their annual cycle. Denis will point out native plants\, ornamental plantings\, invasive species\, shrubs and trees. Birds are usually abundant at Spring Grove and will also be pointed out. \nOther than a short drive from here or there to move to a different part of the cemetery\, participants should be prepared for a few hours of being on foot and moderate walking. Much of the walking will be relatively flat and on pavement\, but there are a few low hills. In January we suggest wearing sturdy footwear and clothes to accommodate the temperatures\, and bringing water. Binoculars are necessary to see birds well. Restrooms are available at the cemetery office. If you have any questions\, feel free to contact Denis. \nDirections: The Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum main entrance is located at 4521 Spring Grove Avenue just west of the Winton Road intersection. To find our meeting spot\, drive in the Spring Grove Avenue main gates and go straight. You will go through a short tunnel (old RR archway). Just beyond the tunnel\, pull over and park alongside the road and look for Denis. \nSpring Grove Cemetery website: \nhttps://www.springgrove.org/locations/spring-grove-cemetery-arboretum/#hrs \nSpring Grove Cemetery Map: \n(Click on or cut and paste into your browser) \nhttps://assets.takeshape.io/af54a46e-9d1d-4a13-84ea-ea820654ba30/dev/66f7f564-13e7-4da3-9599-d5fc44c9d764/Spring%20Grove%20Cemetery%20and%20Arboretum%20Map.pdf \nThe Meeting Place can be found here: Spring Grove Cemetery \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes at the Cincinnati Museum Center Zoology Collection - Update
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Behind the Scenes at the Museum Center Zoology Collection\nLocation: Geier Center \nDate: Thursday January 22\, 2026\nMeet: 7 PM (directions upon registration)\nOrganizer: Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com. \nUpdate: All spaces are booked for this program\, including both the January and February dates. Email to join the waitlist.    \nCome join the Audubon Society of Ohio as we tour behind the scenes at the Museum Center’s Zoology Collection! Cincinnati Museum Center’s Zoology Collection includes birds\, mammals\, reptiles\, amphibians\, fish\, insects\, and shells.  These animals represent wildlife diversity from all over the world\, but with a regional focus.  We’ll explore all of these collections\, as well as learn about how specimens arrive at the museum\, how they are prepared\, and how we use them.  You’ll also meet our extinct birds (one in particular has been in the news lately).  The museum is planning a major collections move in 2027 – we’ll share some details on that\, as well. \n  \nThe collections cover a wide range of birds and other critters\, and we will have a chance to look at any attendee’s specimens of choice. This trip will be led by Dr. Heather Farrington\, the current Curator of Zoology at the Museum Center (and a former president of our Audubon Chapter!). The field trip will be on Thursday\, January 22nd at 7pm. We will meet at the Geier Center. Directions for parking will be shared with registered attendees prior to the field trip. \n  \nSince there is limited space available in the collections\, we are only able to accommodate 15 people for this field trip. If you wish to attend\, please email Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com. The first 15 to email will be given slots to attend. If there is high demand\, we are planning a second field trip date in February. If you do not make the list for January\, please let Ryan know if you would like to be first considered for February. \n(Contributed by Ryan Jorgensen)

SUMMARY:Winter or First Signs of Spring Botanical and Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Winter or First Signs of Spring Botanical and Bird Walk \nLocation: Spring Grove Cemetery \nDate: Sunday\, February 15\, 2026 \nMeet: 10:00 A.M. at Spring Grove Cemetery\, along the road just beyond the tunnel from the main entrance on Spring Grove Avenue \nLeader: Denis Conover\, (513) 390-0863\, conovedg@hotmail.com \n  \nThis late February field trip to Spring Grove Cemetery will look more like winter than early spring as snow will probably still be on the ground. Even though the snow will have begun melting\, a winter landscape will greet us and it will be interesting to see if we can find any signs of the coming spring. Regardless\, our regular Spring Grove leader\, Denis Conover\, will focus on whatever nature brings us. Denis has become our designated ASO field trip leader for our monthly Spring Grove Cemetery field trip. Denis is a UC biology professor\, an ASO Board Member and an expert botanist and naturalist. And he loves Spring Grove and knows it as well as anyone. \n  \nAs always Denis will take us on a walk and point out the diverse botanical community and seasonal birds found at Spring Grove Cemetery.  He will identify the tremendous diversity of trees\, shrubs\, and other plants that can be found here and expound on their ecology. He will also point out our native flora\, invasive species\, and ornamental plantings as well as show us some of the champion trees found here. Denis has interests in all aspects of natural history and he will be sure to point out the birds and other fauna we are sure to see. So come along and join Denis to see the beautiful grounds of the cemetery on what should be a beautiful winter or early spring (your guess is as good as mine) morning walk and gain some tips and insight into plant identification and their natural history as well as winter resident bird species. \n  \nParticipants should be prepared for a few hours of steady walking\, most of which will be relatively flat and on pavement\, but there will also be some walking off pavement on trails or in damp grass or snow. This will be a three to four hour walk but you can always end your walk whenever you like. Denis is always willing to stay later if anyone wants to go longer. We suggest wearing good waterproof footwear and dress for cold temperatures. Binoculars are not necessary to see plants but are recommended if you have them\, or want to see birds clearly. Restrooms are available at the cemetery office. \n  \nSnow will not cancel this field trip. Severe winter weather of course would cancel the trip. If you are unsure at the time\, don’t hesitate to contact Denis. \n  \nDirections: The Spring Grove Cemetery main entrance is located on Spring Grove Avenue just west of the Winton Road intersection. To find our meeting spot\, drive in through the main entrance gates and go straight. You will go through a short tunnel. Just beyond the tunnel pull over and park on the right side of the road. \n  \nSpring Grove Cemetery website: \nhttps://www.springgrove.org/locations/spring-grove-cemetery-arboretum/ \n  \nSpring Grove Cemetery Map: \nhttps://assets.takeshape.io/af54a46e-9d1d-4a13-84ea-ea820654ba30/dev/5d7beeda-d7d3-4c82-966c-d22f93ebe751/2023_Visitor%20Map_current%20champion%20trees%20(2).pdf \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Wintering Merlins Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Wintering Merlins Field Trip \nLocation: New St. Joseph’s Cemetery (Price Hill) \nDate: Saturday\, February 21\, 2026 \nMeet: 4:00 P.M. at the Bell Tower and Office parking lot located at the Foley Road and Pedretti Avenue entrance to St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The address is 4500 Foley Road. \nLeader: Bill Zimmerman\, Text or Call (513) 708-8117 \n  \nThis will be a short late afternoon field trip. But it may be one you might not want to miss. On this trip it will be highly likely that we will see at least one\, and maybe more\, Merlins. These smallish raptors are rather rare migrants and winter residents in our region of the country\, but their wintering numbers have seemingly increased over the past decade. And they also seem to have a preference for the habitats found in most cemeteries. Merlins are small hawks and included in the falcon family. They are larger than kestrels and smaller than Peregrines. But don’t let their relatively small size fool you. They are very fast fliers and fierce birds of prey that feed on small to medium sized birds. For whatever reason\, they find New St Joseph’s Cemetery suits their needs very well. Four Merlins were seen on last year’s field trip here. \n  \nWhy so late in the day for this field trip you might ask. During the day these birds hunt over a wide area and can be difficult to find. But they roost overnight at St. Josephs. So the best time to see them is an hour or so before nightfall when they come back to the cemetery to roost for the night. \n  \nOur trip leader is Bill Zimmerman who will explain all of this and more about Merlins when we meet. Bill is an exceptional birder and all around naturalist. Bill lives nearby the cemetery and has made it a point to monitor these birds over the past many winters. He has recorded a lot of important data over those years. Several years ago\, Bill began what has become an annual Winter Merlin Survey in the Greater Cincinnati area held on one day in February. The results of these surveys have given us much information regarding wintering Merlin populations in our area. \n  \nBill’s plan is to meet in the Bell Tower and Office parking lot\, located at the Foley Road & Pedretti Avenue entrance. There he will give us a brief overview about Merlins. Bill will then lead us through the cemetery as we look for these birds. We will of course find other species of wintering birds as we move through the grounds. Bill may have us drive into the heart of the cemetery\, but expect some moderate walking on cemetery roads. \n  \nRemember to dress appropriately for cold weather with decent foot wear. You will need binoculars to see birds well. This trip will end when the cemetery closes at 5 PM.  Severe weather will cancel this trip. Contact Bill if you are unsure or have any other questions. \n  \nNew St Joseph’s address: 4500 Foley Road\, Cincinnati\, OH 45238 \nNew St. Joseph’s Cemetery website (with map) https://www.stjoenew.com/ \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger) \n

SUMMARY:Early Spring Migration Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Early Spring Migration (especially waterfowl) \nLocation: East Fork State Park (Harsha Lake) \nDate: Saturday\, February 28th\, 2026 \nMeet: 8:00 A.M. at the East Fork State Parks South Swimming Beach parking lot\, nearest the Pavilion (see the directions below). \nLeader: Dave Helm\, (513) 403-4519\, helmmd@icloud.com \n  \nThe focus of this trip will be waterfowl\, gulls and other water birds. Many waterfowl winter in our region and the second half of February marks the beginning of spring waterfowl migration so we should find plenty of ducks of several different species at East Fork. Our trip leader\, Dave Helm\, knows East Fork SP as well as anyone. He is also a long-time expert birder and skilled naturalist. Dave is a long time ASO advocate and is a current member of our ASO board. \n  \nSince our focus will be on waterfowl and water birds\, Dave’s plan is to drive around the lake from one vantage point to another\, stopping and scanning for waterfowl and other birds at each spot.  A diverse number of other species are also expected on this trip and you can be sure that Dave won’t miss much. Winter residents will still be around as well as a few early migrants. There is a decent chance to find Red-headed Woodpeckers and raptors of several different species are also expected\, including Bald Eagles which now nest within the park. And there is always a chance for a rarity\, as East Fork has an excellent reputation in that regard\, particularly during migratory months. \n  \nWhile most of the trip will consist of scanning the lake for water birds from various vantage points\, we can expect some light walking here and there. Any walking we do will be moderate and at a leisurely pace over mostly level trails and roadsides. Spotting scopes will be useful for scanning the lake so bring them if you have one. This trip will break up by noon. Restrooms are available in the park. It is February\, so expect the weather to be cold and possibly wet so dress accordingly. Severe weather will cancel this trip. If you are unsure\, or have any other questions concerning this field trip\, feel free to contact Dave \n  \nDirections: We will meet at the Park’s south swimming beach parking lot\, nearest to the Pavilion. To get to the East Fork SP south entrance from I-275\, take exit #65\, SR 125 (Beechmont Ave./Ohio Pike) and go east about 9 miles to the junction of Rt. 222. Turn left onto Old State Rte. 125 (opposite Rt. 222) and follow the signs to the Park entrance. Follow the Park Road (and signs) to the East Fork SP Swimming Beach. Meet in the Parking Lot nearest the Pavilion. \n  \nVisit the East Fork State Park website for a park map and other info at: \nhttps://ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-fork-state-park \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)
