SUMMARY:Bird Banding at the UC Field Station
DESCRIPTION:Title: Bird Banding at the UC Field Station \nTime and Date: Saturday\, November 14th\, 7 AM \nLocation: UC Field Station\, 11053 Oxford Rd\, Harrison\, OH 45030 \nLeader: Dr. Ron Canterbury \nOrganizer: Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com \nFall migration is coming to a close and we are slowly welcoming back our winter avian friends. With this change\, our favorite winter sparrows\, kinglets\, and nuthatches are soon to grace our backyards and preserves. Come join the Audubon Society of Ohio to observe our familiar and maybe not so familiar winter species up close and in person. \nDr. Ron Canterbury\, our local ornithologist from University of Cincinnati\, will be leading a bird banding demonstration at the UC Field Station Saturday\, November 14th at 7AM. Dr. Canterbury will be setting up “mist nets” (netting with extremely fine roping) to snare birds as they move around the field station habitat. From there\, he will collect data and “band” the bird\, assigning it an ID tag that can be used for relocating the same bird. This data is invaluable in studying the movement and habitat usage of birds\, and can be crucial in making conservation decisions. \nInclement weather will cancel this event. If it is rainy or windy\, the event will be canceled. In order to notify you of cancellation\, please email Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com if you plan on attending this event. Ryan will email you in the event of a cancellation. The UC Field Station is located at 11053 Oxford Rd\, Harrison\, OH 45030. Parking is located on site at the listed address. Please park in front of the barn where it faces Oxford Rd. If posted\, please follow event parking signs. Netting will be set up in the immediate environs\, so do not expect much walking (<0.5 miles). The property is flat and grassy. Be sure to wear footwear that you can reasonably expect to be wet by morning dew in the grass. Bathrooms will be available on site. Any questions regarding the event can be sent to Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com. \n

SUMMARY:Behind-the-Scenes at the Museum Center’s Geier Center
DESCRIPTION:Title: Behind-the-Scenes at the Museum Center’s Geier Center \nTime and Date: Tuesday\, December 1st\, 7 PM \nLocation: Geier Center\, 760 W 5th St\, Cincinnati\, OH 45203 \nEvent Host: Dr. Heather Farrington \nOrganizer: Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com \n  \nCome join the Audubon Society of Ohio as we tour behind the scenes at the Museum Center’s Zoology Collection! Cincinnati Museum Center’s Zoology Collection includes birds\, mammals\, reptiles\, amphibians\, fish\, insects\, and shells.  These animals represent wildlife diversity from all over the world\, but with a regional focus.  We’ll explore all of these collections\, as well as learn about how specimens arrive at the museum\, how they are prepared\, and how we use them.  You’ll also meet our extinct birds (one in particular has been in the news lately).  The museum is planning a major collections move in 2027 – we’ll share some details on that\, as well.  \n \nThe collections cover a wide range of birds and other critters\, and we will have a chance to look at any attendee’s specimens of choice. This trip will be led by Dr. Heather Farrington\, the current Curator of Zoology at the Museum Center (and a former president of our Audubon Chapter!). The field trip will be on Tuesday\, December 1st at 7pm. We will meet at the Geier Center.  Directions for parking will be shared with registered attendees prior to the field trip. \n \nSince there is limited space available in the collections\, we are only able to accommodate 15 people for this field trip. If you wish to attend\, please email Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com. The first 15 to email will be given slots to attend. If there is high demand\, I am hoping to schedule a future date. \n
