SUMMARY:Fall Botanical & Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Fall Botanical & Bird Walk \nLocation: Spring Grove Cemetery \nDate: Sunday\, October 18\, 2026 \nMeet: 10:00 AM at Spring Grove Cemetery\, along the road just beyond the tunnel from the main entrance on Spring Grove Avenue \nLeader: Denis Conover\, (513) 390-0863\, conovedg@hotmail.com \n Join us for our monthly field trip to Spring Grove Cemetery. The trees and shrubs on this beautiful property should still be showing some brilliant fall colors on this date. Who better to answer our questions concerning how trees and other plants prepare for winter than our regular Spring Grove field trip leader\, noted botanist Denis Conover. Denis will focus on fall color and the seasonal change that all plants go through and will point out the diverse botanical community found at Spring Grove Cemetery. \nDenis is an ASO Board Member\, a UC Biology professor\, and an expert botanist and naturalist. He has interests in all aspects of natural history and he will be sure to point out the birds and other fauna we are sure to see. So come along and join Denis to see the fall foliage on what should be a beautiful autumnal morning and gain some tips and insight on plant identification and their natural history. Late migrant songbirds and new winter arrivals should be plentiful and many should be seen. \nParticipants should be prepared for a few hours of steady walking\, most of which will be relatively flat and on pavement\, but there will also be some walking off pavement on trails or in damp or wet grass. This will be a three to four hour walk. Denis is always willing to stay later if anyone wants to go longer. We suggest wearing good waterproof footwear and dress for cool to cold temperatures. Binoculars are not necessary to see plants but are recommended if you have them\, or want to see birds clearly. Restrooms are available at the cemetery office. Denis says rain will not cancel this trip. If you have any questions\, feel free to contact Denis. \nDirections: The Spring Grove Cemetery main entrance is located on Spring Grove Avenue just west of the Winton Road intersection. To find our meeting spot\, drive in through the main entrance gates and go straight. You will go through a short tunnel. Just beyond the tunnel\, pull over and park along the right side of the road. \nSpring Grove Cemetery website: \nhttps://www.springgrove.org/locations/spring-grove-cemetery-arboretum/ \nSpring Grove Cemetery Map: \nhttps://www.springgrove.org/resource/maps/ \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:ASO Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Title: The 13-year Cicada Brood XXII: a Periodical Problem \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, October 21st\, 7:00PM \nLocation: Sharon Centre in Sharon Woods\, 11450 Lebanon Road\, Sharonville\, OH 45241 and Zoom (see link below) \nSpeaker: Dr. Gene Kritsky \nOrganizer: Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com \nThe periodical cicada Brood XXII is the smallest of Ohio’s broods\, and the most recent to be discovered. The brood has two disjunct populations\, one in Mississippi and Louisiana and another in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky. The southern population was first recognized in 1845 by Dr. David Phares. It was unique to entomologists as Phares claimed it had a 13-year life cycle and not the 17-year life cycle of the other known broods. The northern population was not recognized until 2001\, and its discovery documented the only 13-year brood to occur in Ohio. This presentation will cover how it was discovered\, and where you can see it when it emerges next spring in 2027. \nGene Kritsky is Professor Emeritus of Biology and the former Dean of the School of Behavioral and Natural Sciences at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati\, Ohio.  He earned a Ph.D. and a MS in entomology from the University of Illinois and a BA in Biology from Indiana University. \nThis meeting will also be available on Zoom at: https://zoom.us/j/94422796235?pwd=alafSCErOt8RzjUENpVrVOzZWIXpjn.1 \nMeeting ID: 944 2279 6235 \n(Contributed by Ryan Jorgensen)

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Fernald Preserve and Shaker Trace
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Fall Migration in Wetlands and Grasslands \nDate and Time: Saturday\, October 24th\, 2026\, 8:00 AM \nLocation: Fernald Preserve and Shaker Trace \nMeet: in the gravel Parking Area located in front of the Observation Deck at Lodge Pond at Fernald Preserve. See directions below. \nLeader: Ryan Jorgensen\, (630) 333-2631\, jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com \nJoin our trip leader Ryan Jorgensen as he explores these fascinating areas on what should be a pleasant autumnal morning walk in two beautiful natural settings. Ryan is a skilled birder and naturalist and an expert level herpetologist and current ASO board member. \nThis field trip will visit two outstanding preserves located within a mile or two of each other. Both locations are unique but are also very similar to each other. Shaker Trace (a part of Miami Whitewater Forest) is a large managed grassland and marsh. Fernald Preserve also has a large grassland interspersed with small ponds and marshy spots. While the fall migration of neotropical songbirds has wound down by this date\, sparrow migration is at peak and a number of uncommon species usually turn up in these locations every fall. There will also be a number of our winter residents just now arriving. Waterfowl migration is also underway and can be seen on the many ponds on this date and both habitats attract a variety of raptors. Bald Eagles are likely to be seen and wintering Northern Harriers may be back by then\, so we expect to see quite a bit of diversity throughout the morning. \nRyan’s plan is to start at Fernald Preserve\, bird there for a while and then move over to the nearby (about 2 mile drive) Shaker Trace grassland and wetland complex for the remainder of our walk. This trip will run into noon or so. \nOther than driving between the two spots\, we will be on foot the entire morning. The area is mostly level but a good portion of our walking may be on wet grass or damp or muddy trails so good waterproof footwear is advised. One should also bring binoculars\, water and dress appropriately for cold autumnal weather. On the other hand\, it might be very mild that day. Nonetheless it is best to be prepared for the worst case. Restrooms are available at the Fernald Visitor Center. Shaker Trace may not have available restrooms\, but there are several available in the main Miami Whitewater Park. If you have any questions\, feel free to contact Ryan. \nFees: A Great Parks motor vehicle permit (annual $10 Hamilton County resident or annual\, $16 non-resident) per car is required at Miami Whitewater/Shaker Trace. There are no fees at Fernald Preserve \nDirections: Fernald Preserve is located in northwestern Hamilton County. The entrance is located at 7400 Wiley Road\, about ¼ of a mile west of State Route 128. Follow the long entrance road to the Lodge Pond parking area on the right side of the road\, just before the turn in the road just ahead. \nYou can visit the Fernald Preserve website for further information at: \nhttps://www.energy.gov/lm/fernald-preserve-visitors-center \nOr the Miami Whitewater Forest website: \nhttp://www.greatparks.org/parks/miami-whitewater-forest \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Bortz Family Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Fall Migration in the Lower Little Miami River Bottoms \nDate and Time: Saturday\, October 31\, 2026\, 8:00 AM \nLocation: Bortz Family Nature Preserve \nMeet: At the Four Seasons Marina located at 4609 Kellogg Avenue. See specific directions below. \nLeader: Lisa Conner\, (765) 337-4669\, lmconner14@gmail.com \nThis field trip will feature a 119 acre nature preserve situated at the confluence of the Little Miami and Ohio Rivers. This property was preserved through the Cardinal Land Conservancy and is now called the Bortz Family Nature Preserve. \nThe field trip will focus primarily on the fall migration of a mixed group of migratory and winter resident species.  Songbirds should be abundant especially late season migrants and returning winter residents. There is an active Bald Eagle nest on the property\, and while the breeding season is long over\, the local resident pair\, Bonnie and Clyde\, and their offspring are usually seen in the area. Waterfowl and other water bird species will also likely be seen as will a host of other seasonal birds. \nOur trip leader\, Lisa Conner\, is a skilled birder and naturalist and is also a current board member of our Audubon Society. Lisa’s plan is to leisurely walk the 1.8 miles of trails through the bottomland forest of this beautiful location. Lisa will help us find and ID the various species of birds and whatever else nature brings our way. \nParticipants should bring binoculars and dress for cool to cold late fall weather. This field trip will run until about noon and will consist entirely of walking along damp or muddy foot trails so appropriate footwear should be worn. There are no restrooms available\, but there are many nearby businesses. If you have any questions\, feel free to contact Lisa. \nDirections: The Bortz Family Nature Preserve is located at the confluence of the Little Miami and Ohio Rivers and is accessed at the Four Seasons Marina (4609 Kellogg Avenue). Upon arriving at the marina on Kellogg Avenue\, follow the driveway all the way down to the Pirates Cove Restaurant and turn left. You will find the Cardinal kiosk and trailhead at the end of the parking lot. \nSee this link for the Bortz Family Nature Preserve: \nhttps://www.cardinallandconservancy.org/bortz-family-nature-preserve/ \n(Contributed by Jay Stenger)
