See directions below.\nTrip Leader: Brian Keane (513) 785-3256\, Keaneb@miamioh.edu\nOur Guide at Huffman Prairie: Dave Nolin \nJoin us for this unique field trip. Huffman Prairie is a State Natural Landmark located on the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base just east of Dayton Ohio. The 112 acre Huffman Prairie is one of the largest prairie remnants in Ohio. Since the 1800s\, nearly all of the prairies of eastern North America have been lost. Many rare plants\, birds\, and insects make the prairie their home. Indeed\, Huffman Prairie hosts one of the best displays of Ohio prairie grasses and flowers. It also hosts impressive populations of rare grassland birds\, such as Bobolinks\, Dickcissels\, Grasshopper and Henslow’s Sparrows and Sedge Wrens. Other unusual species documented on the prairie include the smooth green snake\, thirteen-lined ground squirrel\, and more than 200 species of butterflies and moths — including one found only in this prairie. The best time to see birds is June\, but there should be many summer residents still around on this date. On the other hand\, the last week of July and the first week of August is the peak time to see a spectacular display of wildflowers. \nBrian Keane will be our field trip leader. Brian is an expert naturalist and a Zoology Professor at Miami University and is a past president and current board member of our Audubon Chapter. We will meet Brian at 7:30 AM in the IKEA Parking Lot in West Chester (see directions below). From there we will follow Brian in a caravan to Huffman Prairie\, about a one hour drive\, and should arrive at Huffman Prairie before 9 AM. Brian will provide directions to Huffman Prairie just in case anyone gets separated. We only recommend car-pooling for those who are vaccinated or who live together. \nWhen we arrive at Huffman Prairie\, Brian will introduce us to the esteemed Dave Nolin who will be our guide through the prairie. A case could be made that no one knows Huffman Prairie as well as Dave does. Dave is the retired Director of Conservation for the Five Rivers MetroParks (Dayton & Montgomery County). Dave received his Masters degree in biology from Wright State University in 1988. For 30 years\, he was employed by the Park District and was responsible for habitat management and land acquisition. Dave has written a book\, published in 2018\, entitled “Discovery & Renewal on Huffman Prairie: Where Aviation Took Wing”. We highly recommend it. \nThe walk will last about 2 hours. Walking is flat and will be at a leisurely pace\, with lots of stops to look at flowers\, butterflies and birds. It will be hot so prepare accordingly. We recommend good footwear\, hats\, sun screen\, insect repellent and lots of water to make your trip more enjoyable. There are non-flush restrooms nearby. If you have any questions feel free to contact Brian Keane. \nDirections to IKEA:\nFrom the I-275 and I-75 Interchange\, take I-75 north for 2.4 miles to the Union Center Blvd. Exit # 19. Turn left\, and cross back over I-75. Almost immediately (.2 mile) turn left onto Muhlhauser Road. Go .7 mile and turn left into the IKEA Parking Lot. Park near the retention pond side of the parking lot\, as near to Muhlhauser Rd. as possible. We should be easy to find at 7:30 AM.

SUMMARY:The Oxbow
DESCRIPTION:As the COVID-19 pandemic becomes less severe\, the Audubon Society of Ohio will be conducting more field trips.  We ask that you follow local\, state\, and CDC guidelines on our trips. Although the trips are outdoors\, maintain a safe distance from other participants and wear a mask if you are not fully vaccinated. Also avoid carpooling if you haven’t been vaccinated. Again\, please use common sense as we navigate this pandemic and stay safe. We look forward to seeing you in the field. \nTheme: Early Fall Migration\nLocation: The Oxbow\nDate: Saturday August 14\, 2021\nMeet: At 8:00 A.M. in the Oxbow upper Parking Lot at the main entrance. See directions below.\nTrip Leader: Katie Grigsby (740) 403-5796\, grigsby.katie.c@gmail.com  \nThe focus of this trip will be birds\, specifically early fall migrants through the Oxbow and the Lower Great Miami River valley. That’s right\, I did say fall. While the calendar and temperature tells us it is still late summer\, the southbound fall migration of shorebirds (sandpipers & plovers)\, long-legged waders (herons & egrets) and several other species begins quite early and will be well under way by this date. So come out and join our trip leader\, Katie Grigsby\, for what should be a pleasant late summer morning in the Oxbow area. Katie is a skilled and experienced birder who knows the Oxbow area very well. Katie is also our Audubon Society’s newest board member.  \nShorebirds (sandpipers and plovers) need exposed mudflats\, shorelines and sandbars where they forage for their invertebrate food at water’s edge. When they find areas that have these favorable conditions during their southbound migration they will stop\, rest and refuel\, so to speak. This type of habitat is locally scarce. But during most years the Oxbow area and the lower Great Miami River provides good to great habitat for them. Late summer is usually a fairly dry season locally and the water levels in the lakes and ponds in the Oxbow are usually lower than normal at this season\, exposing shoreline and sometimes creating mudflats\, the preferred habitat of shorebirds and waders. The nearby Great Miami River usually has exposed sand bars at this season as well and the adjacent gravel pits\, particularly the shallow pit\, also attract their share of birds.  \nIn addition to several species of shorebirds\, we expect that we will find numerous Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons as well as a few Green and Black-crowned Night-Herons. This is also a great time of year to find an unusual or rare species such as Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret (but not guaranteed). Purple Martins and other migrating swallows’ can “stage” in very large numbers in the Oxbow during this month and several species of terns\, Osprey\, Bald Eagles and a diverse number of other early fall migrants are all quite possible if not likely. With most of our summer residents still present as well\, we should find a good diversity throughout the morning.  \nKatie plans to hit several spots in and around the Oxbow including Lost Bridge over the Great Miami. There will be some moderate walking\, but it will be slow and easy. This trip will end before noon. It is usually hot at this season\, so we suggest bringing sunscreen\, insect repellant and plenty of water and a hat to make your visit more comfortable. There are no restrooms available in the Oxbow\, but there are plenty of businesses nearby. Feel free to contact Katie if you have any questions. \nWe will meet at the Oxbow parking area which is owned by Oxbow Inc. To get there from I-275 take the Lawrenceburg Indiana/US 50 Exit # 16. At the end of the long exit ramp turn left/south on US 50. Almost immediately\, within about 200 yards\, turn left onto unmarked Walnut Street which is just past the Circle K gas station and before a Waffle House. Drive over the levee to where the road T’s. There will be a fence directly in front of you. Turn right and go about 100 yards to the Oxbow entrance sign. Turn left into the Oxbow. The parking area is immediately on your right. You can also use Google Maps and search for “Oxbow Nature Conservancy”.
