ASO Field Trip – Spring Grove Cemetery
June 20, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
ASO Covid-19 Field Trip Policy:
As the COVID-19 pandemic becomes less severe, the Audubon Society of Ohio will be hosting more field trips. We ask that you follow local, state, and CDC guidelines on our trips. Although the trips are outdoors, maintain a safe distance from other participants and wear a mask if you are not fully vaccinated. Also avoid carpooling if you haven’t been vaccinated. Again, please use common sense as we navigate this pandemic and stay safe. We look forward to seeing you in the field.
Theme: General Nature Walk
Location: Spring Grove Cemetery
Date: Sunday, June 20, 2021, 9 AM
Leader: Denis Conover, (513) 641-3651, conovedg@hotmail.com
The focus of this field trip will be a general nature walk with an emphasis on the growing season and breeding birds. Our trip leader will be UC professor, and skilled botanist and naturalist Denis Conover as he leads us on a mid-morning early summer walk through the beautiful grounds of Spring Grove Cemetery. As its complete name implies, Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum hosts a tremendous diversity of trees, shrubs and other plants. Denis will point out our native flora, invasive species, and ornamental plantings and show us some of the many national and state champion trees found here. Breeding birds will be at peak and should be obvious.
Participants should be prepared for a few hours of walking, most of which will be relatively flat and on pavement, but there will also be some grades and walking on trails or in damp or wet grass. We suggest wearing good waterproof footwear. Binoculars are necessary to see birds. The only restrooms available are at the cemetery office and these may not be open due to Covid19.
So if you are tired of being cooped up, why not come along and join Denis on an early summer morning and gain some tips and insight into plant and bird identification and their natural history.
Meet our field trip leader Denis Conover, at 9 AM at Spring Grove Cemetery, located at 4521 Spring Grove Avenue just west of the Winton Road intersection. To find our meeting spot, drive in the main gates and go straight. You will go through a short tunnel (old RR archway). Just beyond the tunnel pull over on the right and park alongside the road.
If you have any questions feel free to contact Denis Conover (513) 641-3651, conovedg@hotmail.com
