The periodical cicada Brood XXII is the smallest of Ohio’s broods, and the most recent to be discovered. The brood has two disjunct populations, one in Mississippi and Louisiana and another in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky. The southern population was first recognized in 1845 by Dr. David Phares. It was unique to entomologists as Phares claimed it had a 13-year life cycle and not the 17-year life cycle of the other known broods. The northern population was not recognized until 2001, and its discovery documented the only 13-year brood to occur in Ohio. This presentation will cover how it was discovered, and where you can see it when it emerges next spring in 2027.
Gene Kritsky is Professor Emeritus of Biology and the former Dean of the School of Behavioral and Natural Sciences at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned a Ph.D. and a MS in entomology from the University of Illinois and a BA in Biology from Indiana University.
