Bird Banding at the UC Field Station
Title: Bird Banding at the UC Field Station
Time and Date: Saturday, November 14th, 7 AM
Location: UC Field Station, 11053 Oxford Rd, Harrison, OH 45030
Leader: Dr. Ron Canterbury
Organizer: Ryan Jorgensen at jorgensen28ryan@gmail.com
Fall migration is coming to a close and we are slowly welcoming back our winter avian friends. With this change, our favorite winter sparrows, kinglets, and nuthatches are soon to grace our backyards and preserves. Come join the Audubon Society of Ohio to observe our familiar and maybe not so familiar winter species up close and in person.
Dr. Ron Canterbury, our local ornithologist from University of Cincinnati, will be leading a bird banding demonstration at the UC Field Station Saturday, November 14th at 7AM. Dr. Canterbury will be setting up “mist nets” (netting with extremely fine roping) to snare birds as they move around the field station habitat. From there, he will collect data and “band” the bird, assigning it an ID tag that can be used for relocating the same bird. This data is invaluable in studying the movement and habitat usage of birds, and can be crucial in making conservation decisions.
