Phoenicopterus ruber
Following Hurricane Idalia, American Flamingos were reported from several locations in the interior United States. These birds were probably blown inland from the Caribbean populations, rather than from the small South Florida population.
An adult and an immature were seen off the beach at Caesar Creek Lake, on September 1, 2023 (Miller 2023; numerous eBird reports, with photos. Accepted by OBRC, Cefus 2023c). This was the first Ohio record. To illustrate how far-flung Flamingos were this season, one of the Ohio birds was able to be identified later in Chase County, Kansas (Palmer-Ball, Jr., 2024, citing eBird data).
An adult was seen along the Kentucky shoreline upstream from Warsaw, Gallatin County, from September 7 through October 1, 2023. This bird was reported as having been present a day or two earlier, but there was no documented sighting before the seventh. Although the bird was normally found along the Kentucky shore, it was best viewed from the Indiana side of the river. It entered Indiana waters briefly on September 16, and possibly the next day. (Palmer-Ball, Jr., 2024; numerous eBird records, many with photographs; accepted by IBRC w/ photographic evidence, Sanderson 2024. KBRC results not available as of 11/17/2025.)
