Spatula cyanoptera
We have only two records. The first was an adult male which was found on Kellogg Pond, a backwater pond 200 yards north of the Ohio River and about two miles east of Cincinnati, a half mile west of the Miami River bridge. The bird was first seen on March 20, 1951, and continued for eleven days. On several occasions, it flew out over the Ohio River, thereby establishing a Kentucky record. It exhibited courtship behavior toward female Blue-winged Teal. Attempts to collect the bird were unsuccessful, but photographs were taken. (Maslowski April 1, 1951; Kemsies and Randle 1953; Randle 1980; Mengel 1965).
The second record is another male, which was also seen displaying to a female Blue-winged Teal, at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on April 26, 1996 (Harlan 1996).
