Clapper Rail

Rallus crepitans

We have one published record of this species: “May 1, 1891, while crossing the Suspension Bridge over the Ohio River, Henry Cain observed one of these birds running ahead of him. He captured the bird alive, in good condition, with his hat.”(Dury and Kellogg 1891).

Given that Clapper Rails are almost entirely confined to salt marshes along the Atlantic Coast, this is almost certainly a misidentification of the very similar King Rail. Clapper Rail is not accepted on the official list of either Ohio or Kentucky.
