Greater Prairie-Chicken

Tympanuchus cupido

There are no specific records from our area. This western prairie species was extirpated from Ohio by the mid-nineteenth century. It was originally found in the prairie openings of Ohio, mostly northwest. “Anecdotal accounts indicated that populations also existed in the southwestern and west-central counties” (Peterjohn 2001). Langdon 1879 simply calls it “a former resident,” without any details.
