Leach’s Storm-Petrel

Hydrobates leucorhous

Our only local record, and Ohio’s only record, is of a bird found freshly dead on a street in Dayton, on May 16, 1929 (Blincoe 1930). “On preparing the specimen a bruised spot on the skull seemed to indicate the bird had met its death by striking some object while in flight. The stomach was empty although it was not emaciated. Sex determination was not positive but it was believed to be a female.” The specimen is currently housed in The Ohio State University Museum of Biological Diversity, indexed under the former scientific name, Oceanodroma leucorhoa, at B 3100.
