Magnificent Frigatebird

Fregata magnificens

Our sole record of this species is of a bird which was found alive on September 29, 1967 on a lawn in Hyde Park, but which died later the same day. There were no apparent physical injuries to the bird, but when skinned for the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History collection, the stomach was empty, which would help to explain its weakened condition. Hurricane Beulah, which made landfall near Brownsville, Texas, on September 22, may have played a role in the appearance of this bird (Whan 2003b, citing Randle 1988 and Trautman 1968).
