Monk Parakeet

Myiopsitta monachus

We have one record of a nesting attempt, of two birds building a nest in an elm tree along the banks of the Ohio River just off Kellogg Avenue (Maslowski August 24, 1980; Bartlett 1980). The birds were present from July 22 through September 1, 1980. Rumors at the time held that a “concerned naturalist” destroyed the nest.

Monk Parakeets are kept in captivity, and we get occasional reports of what are presumably escapes or releases, but there is no indication that they may be establishing a local population.

This record is from a time when Monk Parakeets were spreading from where they had been introduced in Florida, and there was speculation that they might become a nuisance species such as House Sparrow or European Starling. That did not come to pass; they became established in a number of locations in the United States and Canada, but those population centers do not appear to be spreading.
