Northern Gannet

Morus bassanus

Our only record is a first-year bird which was seen at Mehldahl Dam on December7, 1967 and was later captured exhausted in a backyard in Cincinnati on December 24. After it was captured, it was taken to the Cincinnati Zoo, where it lived for two years. The bird had been banded on Bonaventure Island, Quebec, on September 7 (Petersen 1968, Randle 1988).

There is a pattern of occasional young Northern Gannets drifting up the St. Lawrence River and continuing to Lake Erie, but this is the only one that has been found inland (Peterjohn 1989).
