Porphyrio martinica
There are two Nineteenth Century records of this species. Frank Langdon reported that one had been captured near the mouth of the Great Miami River on March 31, 1877 (Langdon 1877). Three others were found in our area that spring: two at Madisonville and another at Jones Station, about 30 miles from Cincinnati (Kemsies and Randle 1953, citing a letter from Langdon to Wheaton). And Amos Butler reported that the first record for Indiana was taken near Brookville in the spring of 1880 (Butler 1897).
After these reports, the record is silent until the 1960s, when one was found at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on May 12, 1963 (Mathena 1983), followed by one at Cincinnati in June, 1964 (Peterjohn 1983 {citing a report in American Birds, 18(4)454-456}), and possibly another at Spring Valley on June 8, 1968 (eBird checklist S9324123, accepted by reviewer but no details).
There is only one record from the 1970s, one which was present, and photographed, at Cincinnati Nature Center, April 20 through April 24, 1971 (Kleen and Bush 1971).
Likewise, there is only one 1980s record, from Spring Valley Wildlife Area April 18 through April 20, 1983 (Mathena 1984, Peterjohn 1983).
There are two records from the 1990s. One was at Spring Valley April 20 through May 7, 1996 (Conlon and Harlan 1996) and another was at the Shaker Trace Wetlands, in Miami-Whitewater Forest May 22 through May 31, 1999 (Whan 1999; accepted by OBRC McCormac 1999b).
In this century, there is a record of one along Aurora Ferry Road near Petersburg, Boone County May 6 through 8, 2010 (Palmer-Ball and McNeeley 2010b, accepted by KBRC Yandell 2012); one at Spring Valley on May 9, 2010 (Williams 2010, accepted by OBRC Keller 2011); and one at Old Highland Stone Gravel Pits, Highland County, April 10, 2022 (accepted by OBRC Cefus 2022c).
