During the winters of the 1890s, there were several pulses of Thick-billed Murres moving into the Great Lakes region from their normal haunts in the North Atlantic. These resulted in a single record in our area, of a bird found alive in a field near Fair Haven, in Preble County, on December 19, 1896 (Davie 1900, quoted in Whan 2004a). Whan adds that the skin of our bird is in The Ohio State University collection, Entry 1288.
Although there are more recent scattered reports of inland Thick-billed Murres, the phenomenon of large movements has not been repeated, except for another pulse in 1950.
